“It is clear that the will of the Conservative Party is that there should be a new leader of the party and therefore a new prime minister.”

This is how the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, pronounced himself, announcing his withdrawal on Thursday after the immense pressure to which he has been subjected in the last 48 hours.

More than 50 officials have left his government since last Tuesday, when, as a result of a sexual harassment scandal involving Chris Pincher – a conservative parliamentarian close to Johnson – the ministers of the Economy, Rishi Sunak, and of Health , Sajid Javid, tendered their resignation.

At a press conference in front of Downing Street, the seat of government, the British prime minister assured that the process to elect a new leader should begin now and that the detailed process for this will be announced next week.
