The emeritus king of Spain arrives in his country almost two years after leaving

(CNN) — Spain’s emeritus king, Juan Carlos I, arrived in northwestern Spain on Thursday night, his first visit to the country since leaving nearly two years ago while under investigation for his financial dealings.

A plane carrying Juan Carlos from Abu Dhabi, where he has been living, landed at Vigo airport around 7:15 p.m. local time, the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo press office told CNN.

The king emeritus was received at the airport by his eldest daughter, Infanta Elena, and a friend, Pedro Campos, president of the yacht club, where Juan Carlos is expected to attend a yacht event this weekend, the press office said.

The coastal town of Sanxenxo is around 40 minutes’ drive from Vigo Airport. Campos told the Spanish media on Thursday that he would receive the former king at his house this weekend.

The press office of the Spanish Royal House declined to comment on the former king’s arrival in Vigo, calling it a “private matter.”

The Royal House did issue a statement late on Wednesday, saying that Juan Carlos would arrive in Spain this Thursday and spend several days in Sanxenxo before meeting his son, King Felipe, in Madrid on Monday.
