Trump also announced that he signed a proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.
“Today I signed a proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. Morocco’s serious, credible and realistic autonomy proposal is the ONLY basis for a just and lasting solution for lasting peace and prosperity!” Trump said on Twitter. .
Morocco has been pressuring the United States to do so for decades.
CNN’s Vivian Salama points out that there is a large Moroccan Jewish population living in the diaspora, especially in Europe and the United States. It was home to one of the largest Jewish populations in the Middle East and North Africa. Many of them fled in the 1950s and 1960s. This movement will probably encourage many Moroccan Jews to visit their ancestral land.
