Woman dies trying to scale border wall between the US and Mexico


(CNN) — A 32-year-old woman died Monday while trying to enter the United States through a crossing in Arizona, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said. in a Facebook post.

The woman, who has not been named, is believed to have entangled her leg or foot in a harness while attempting to rappel down from the top of the “international border wall,” the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office reports that the woman was “trapped face down for a significant amount of time,” learning of the incident through a call from Mexican authorities.

The woman was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

“These types of incidents are not political, they are humanitarian realities that someone has lost a loved one in a senseless tragedy,” said Sheriff Mark J. Dannels. ”We have to do better to find solutions to the challenges facing our border, and we have to do it for the right reasons. Regardless of opinions, facts must guide our progress and we will continue to work toward a shared goal of border security.”

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said an autopsy will be completed and his office is continuing an investigation.
